Newmarket International Silver Stick Finals - Finalists
The Minor Bantam Purple Mustangs travelled to Newmarket on January 11th - 14th to compete in the International Silver Stick Finals. The Mustangs were invited to this tournament as a result of their regional Silver Stick championship in Owen Sound.
The team started the round robin off slowly in a game against the host Newmarket Redmen, but eventually finished them off with a 6-1 victory. Next up, were the Midland North Stars. The Mustangs earned a 2-2 tie against Midland in a game they controlled from start to finish, but were unable to find the back of the net enough to earn a victory. The third game of the round robin saw the Mustangs face the Clarington Toros and earn a convincing 7-1 victory. The last game of the round robin saw the Mustangs square off against the Hespeler Shamrocks. In a physical contest, the Mustangs earned a 2-2 tie. The team finished first in their pool in the round robin, which earned them a rematch against the Hespeler Shamrocks. In a game that the Mustangs entered with a depleted roster, 3 regulars out for various reasons, the team pulled together and played their best game of the year, earning a 6-2 victory. That victory sent the Mustangs to the finals against the Woodstock 'AA" Navy Vets. The Mustangs competed hard in the finals, but came up short, losing the final game 3-0. It was a great weekend for the boys, they should be proud as they finished the two silver stick tournaments a combined 9-1-2 record.
