Purple Cup - Game 1 Recap
Game 1 of the Purple Cup was a hard fought affair! The tension in the arena was palpable and even though there were only about 12 fans in attendance (covid sucks) it felt like hundreds.

With no outside food or drinks allowed, and social distancing measures being forcefully followed, all eyes were glued to the game at hand.

The White team led by coach Derek and the Dark team led by Lance both came out like they haven't played a meaningful game since March! The players were flying up and down the ice. Even though every passing drill practiced and taught the last 2+ seasons was ignored, it was still great to see the energy and excitement from both teams.

The referee looked the part despite the numerous adjustments that he was forced to make.  Before puck drop he even did the customary nod to both goalies, benches and the time keeper before play got underway. Too bad he forgot to take the puck bucket off the ice for the first 2 minutes of play!

From early on it was clear the ref was going to let the players decide the game for themselves as it was just too much work to drop the mask, and blow the whistle. However this is definitely how the players wanted it decided!

The White team got on the board first but the lead lasted not long enough to put the "1 " on the scoreboard as Dark stormed back to tie it up quickly. From there on it was mostly a dark onslaught as they managed to bury their chances and build a 5-1 lead after the first half of play. Andrew R was busy in net throughout and got better and better as the game went on.  Cayne was his typical acrobatic self especially in these barnstorming, free flowing, non sanctioned type games.

The second half was much more even but White couldn't bury their chances and never really put a scare into the Dark team. The Dark team seemed to take the words of sage wisdom from coach Lance while White may have already tuned out their Tier 3 coach despite the QUACK QUACK QUACK Mighty Ducks cheer to start the game. The final score was 7-4.

Will a couple of mostly meaningless late goals lead to momentum for White in game 2? Can Derek use the fact that his team won the 2nd half 3-2 as motivation to get back in the series? The expectations are that this will be a close, hard fought series with Game 2 already setting up as a must win for White. We will see what Derek has in store for his group next week and what adjustments he can make.
