Junior Mustangs Win Byron Optimist Competitive Tournament
The Junior Mustangs won their second straight tournament over the weekend.

The Junior Mustangs Minor Peewee White team kept the momentum going after clinching first place for the regular season over the prior weekend.  They won their second straight tournament this past weekend.  After a strong showing in Detroit two weeks earlier, the team ended its tournament season as it started back in September in Toronto, taking home gold in London.

The action started on Friday with a highly anticipated match-up against our Purple Junior Mustangs rivals.  The game was a real barn-burner with a number of near misses that could have swung things either way.  After three tight periods, our boys prevailed with a 3-2 victory.

Next up was Friday night action, with a match against league rivals the Brantford 99ers.  Always a tough team to play, the 5-1 result was evidence that the Junior Mustangs were firing on all cylinders going into the weekend.

The boys were able to get a good night sleep with the morning off on Saturday.  That proved necessary, as the GTHL A team Ted Reeve Thunder, up first on Saturday afternoon, were a very game opponent. The few fans that remained seated were on the edge of said seats. Things concluded with a 3-3 tie.

Saturday evening found the Junior Mustangs with their fate in their own hands.  A win guaranteed a place in the final.  Another tough league rival was in the way, the Sarnia Sting.  The Junior Mustangs took charge of things early this time, and with a 6-1 victory took home ice in the final.  Their opponent was decided shortly thereafter and the table was set for a rematch with the Ted Reeve Thunder on Sunday afternoon.

The final saw the Junior Mustangs play their strongest game of the tournament.  They took an early 4-1 lead, but the Thunder pushed back.  After some momentum swings the Junior Mustangs rallied with a team effort for a very strong finish and a 7-3 win for the tournament championship.

Thanks to the West London Minor Hockey Association for a well-run, competitive tournament.
